HAIRSPRAY

hairspray

The hit musical Hairspray will return to the West End later this year with Michael Ball set to reprise his role as Edna Turnblad, actor and comedian Les Dennis will play joke-store owner and hopeless romantic Wilbur Turnblad with Lizzie Bea (Kinky Boots West End, Becoming Nancy) as the musical's heroine, Tracy Turnblad, while Marisha Wallace (Waitress, Disney's Aladdin, Dreamgirls London) will play the one and only Motormouth Maybelle. Also appearing in the show will be Rita Simons (EastEnders) as Velma von Tussle and Jonny Amies (Sex Education) as Link Larkin.

The full company includes Georgia Anderson (Amber von Tussle), Kimani Arthur (Little Inez), Dermot Canavan (Wilbur for certain performances), Lori Haley Fox (Female Authority Figure), Mari McGinlay (Penny Pingleton), Ashley Samuels (Seaweed J Stubbs), Michael Vinsen (Corny Collins) and Imogen Bailey, Pearce Barron, Jordan Benjamin, Joel Cooper, Luke George, Christopher Gopaul, Bradley Judge, Winny Herbert, Lily Laight, Madeleine Lawton, Holly Liburd, Will Luckett, Mireia Mambo, Kody Mortimer, Robyn Rose, Tinovimbanashe Sibanda, Amy West and Natalie Woods.

Hairspray is based on the 1988 film comedy. The musical takes place in 1962 with Baltimore's Tracy Turnblad (a large girl with big hair and a large heart) who wants to dance. She wins a spot on the 'The Corny Collins Show' which is a local television programme, and overnight becomes a teenage celebrity. But can she overthrow the programme's reigning princess Amber Von Tussle, whose overbearing mother produces the show.

They are both excited about a Corny Collins Spectacular: Live from the Eventorium, sponsored by Ultra Clutch Hairspray. The girl on the show who gets the highest popularity rating will be crowned Miss Teenage Hairspray - and Amber wants that crown.

The catchy score of Hairspray (including "You Can't Stop the Beat") takes Tracy from the sound stage of a 60's dance show to the streets of Baltimore and on to a downtown rhythm and blues record shop.

The show's original creative team, including director Jack O'Brien, choreographer Jerry Mitchell and producer Adam Spiegel will reunite for the production.

Hairspray  is also embarking on a new UK tour 2021.

This production ended its run on Wednesday 29th September.
