SWEET CHARITY

Sweet Charity at the Haymarket TheatreTamzin Outhwaite stars as Charity Hope Valentine in the musical comedy Sweet Charity.  Most of you will probably have seen the 1969 film version with Shirley MacLaine playing the hapless heroine.

The story revolves around Charity who works as a dance hostess and longs for love, but has bad luck with men. Charity strikes up a relationship with the mega shy Oscar when they get stuck in a lift together. Unfortunately she doesn’t tell him what she does for a living, and when she finally plucks up the courage to admit all to Oscar he seems to accept it, but at the last minute tells Charity that he cannot marry her.

The optimistic Charity faces her future -  alone for the time being - but living hopefully ever after.

This show has some high-energy highlights, especially in The Rich Man’s Frug (danced by the Ebony Molina) and Rhythm of Life. There are some great performances with Josefina Gabrielle and Tiffany Graves as Charity’s best friends, while Mark Umbers, as the movie star and love interest, almost steas the show with his brilliant comic timing.

Originally directed and choreographed by the great Bob Fosse, Sweet Charity premiered on Broadway in 1966, where it was nominated for 12 Tony Awards. This revival is directed by Matthew White, with Musical Supervison by Nigel Lilley and Choreography by Stephen Mear
