INTO THE WOODS

Into the Woods at Regents ParkInto the Woods is based on stories of the Brothers Grimm which Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine have adapted to give a dark and humorous twist.  The famous tales of Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk, Cinderella and Rapunzel (who lets her hair down) are interwoven with the story of the Baker and his Wife who are trying to have children.

This tale goes way beyond the usual “happily ever after” we have come to expect as the  characters find themselves in unfamiliar circumstances and their hopes and dreams are shattered.

In celebration of Sondheim’s 80th birthday Hannah Waddingham and Jenna Russell will be appearing at the Open Air Theatre. Both actresses are no stranger to Sondheim musicals with Waddingham appearing in last year’s Menier Chocolate Factory production of A Little Night Music, and Russell won an Olivier for Sunday in the Park with George in the West End and then transferred with the show to Broadway.

Joining Hannah Waddingham as the Witch will be Mark Hadfield playing opposite Jenna Russell as the Baker, Helen Dallimore (who originated the role of Glinda in the West End production of Wicked!) playing Cinderella, Michael Xavier Cinderella’s Prince/The Wolf,  Gaye Brown (Cinderella's Stepmother), Gemma Wardle (Cinderella's Mother), Beverly Rudd (Little Red Riding Hood), Alice Fearn (Rapunzel), Simon Thomas (Rapunzel’s Prince), Valda Aviks (Granny), Billy Boyle (Mysterious Man), Amy Ellen Richardson (Florinda), Ben Stott (Jack), Mark Goldthorp (Steward), Amy Griffiths (Lucinda) and Marc Antolin and Sophie Caton as Swings.

The Voice of the Giant will be provided by Dame Judi Dench. But unfortunately it will be pre-recorded and she will not be appearing in the production!

Stephen Sondheim is one of theatre’s most prolific composers. Into the Woods has Music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and the book was written by James Lapine.  This production is co-directed by Timothy Sheader and Liam Steel following their previous collaboration on Romeo and Juliet.
